  1. Jake Fallon awarded ACCE SPE scholarship

The ACCE (Automotive & Composites Divisions) scholarship is awarded to a graduate student with an exemplary proposal which showcases the students planned work and contributions to the automotive composites or other ground transportation industry's. Jake Fallon was the decided ACCE SPE scholarship recipient in June 2017 for his research in thermoplastic nanoparticle carbon fiber composites for the automotive industry. The objective of his research is to develop an efficient production method for thermoplastic composites which can be used in commercially available automobiles.

  2. 2017 SME Digital Manufacturing Challenge Winners

Students Eric Gilmer, Jake Fallon, Camden Chatham and Andy Cohen won SME's 2017 Digital Manufacturing Challenge with an additively manufactured personalized golf training grip.   The  Virginia Tech team, advised by Professor Christopher Williams, was recognized at the 2017 Rapid +TCT Event in Pittsburgh, PA.

"The Virginia Tech team created a Customized Golf Grip to facilitate proper swings and allow players to practice without a professional's supervision. The grips are custom fit using clay, which is scanned to create a 3D-CAD model. Using additive manufacturing, the CAD model is directly manufactured into a set of grips."  See the article from SME -  http://www.sme.org/2017-direct-manufacturing-challenge-winners/  and read more in the August 2017 Manufacturing Engineering article-  http://content.digitalpub.blue-soho.com/web/y5b2/0A1wm9v/ME.August.2017/html/index.html?page=14
  3. James Owens wins award from Rice University at GCURS

Chemical Engineering junior James Owens was recently awarded the "Outstanding Overall Presentation" Award from Rice University for his talk at the university's annual Gulf Coast Undergraduate Research Symposium (GCURS). He participated in the Chemical and Biological Engineering division with a presentation entitled "Cellulose Nanocrystal Templates for Transparent Conductive Films", a joint project between Prof. Michael Bortner (Chemical Engineering) and Prof. Johan Foster (Materials Science and Engineering).

  4. Jake Fallon receives inaugural Garth L. Wilkes MII Interdisciplinary Student Scholar award

Jake Fallon recently received the inaugural Garth L. Wilkes MII Interdisciplinary Student Scholar award presented at the 2018 MII Technical Conference and Review. The Garth L. Wilkes Interdisciplinary Scholar Awards are named in honor of Professor Garth L. Wilkes, who was an internationally-recognized interdisciplinary scholar, faculty colleague, and personal friend to many people around the world. This coveted scholarship is presented to a graduate student who represents interdisciplinary excellence in research, teaching, and engagement. Jake Fallon is a Macromolecular Science and Engineering student advised by Dr. Michael J. Bortner in the Department of Chemical Engineering.

  5. Kelsey Niehoff wins VSGC scholarship for research in nanomaterial reinforced ultra high temperature ceramics

Kelsey Niehoff is one of the recipients of the prestigious Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) Undergraduate STEM Research Scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year. The VSGC Undergraduate STEM Research Scholarship Program provides scholarships to rising juniors and seniors in STEM fields who have a specific faculty-mentored research project that has NASA or aerospace relevance. Kelsey, advised by Dr. Bortner (ChE) and Dr. Tallon (MSE), is studying how the mechanical and thermal properties of porous ultra high temperature ceramics can be improved with nanomaterial reinforcements. Her research aligns with NASA's Space Technology mission directorate through applications such as re-entry and hypersonic vehicles.
